Wave Robotics was founded on the belief that skateboarding hadn't seen a real materials breakthrough since the 1970s. We set out to change that.
THE DISCOVERY
In 2019, materials scientist Diego Salazar was studying micro-lattice polymer structures for aerospace vibration isolation. During a weekend skate session, he had an insight: the same physics that made these structures ideal for dampening aircraft panel vibration could, if inverted in design, amplify directional energy transfer instead.
He called Mara Chen, an aerospace composites engineer and longtime skate companion. Within three months they had the first prototype substrate. Within two years, the patent application for US11,234,567 was approved.
Wave Robotics launched its first commercial product in 2021. The Wave Pro X sold out in six days.
